Valentine's Day Our Way

Who needs fancy restaurants and/or expensive gifts? This year, Will and I are doing Valentine's Day our way. I'm calling this one, "Involuntary Thriftiness 2010."

First, we're changing the date. That's right; our Valentine's Day is today, the 12th. Being LDS, we have chosen not to go out on Sunday. My parents (our babysitters) are going out on Monday. That left us today or tomorrow. We're going out today.

For a thoroughly romantic lunch, we drove through Wendy's. Will got Death on a Bun, alias "The Triple Baconator," and I tried the Beef and Blue, which was pretty good, but only if you like blue cheese a lot.

In about 15 minutes, we're leaving to catch a matinee of the new movie, "Valentine's Day," using some of the movie theater gift certificates we got for Christmas. Oh,yeah. If we're very lucky, one of my brother's friends will be working today and we'll get in for even less. Heck yes!

We didn't do fancy presents this year. Instead, we're sticking with food-based stuff. Yes, he did get me a box of chocolates (mmmm....) and I got him beef jerky. One thing I've learned about gift giving, it's about knowing that other person and getting them what they like, no matter what convention tells you. Will gets beef jerky on many holidays, and so far every time is like the first time, ha ha.
The point is, it doesn't matter to us that we can't do the big, conventional stuff. The point of the day is to show love and spend time with your significant other (or to walk around BYU campus with your number written on suckers and giving them to random, hopefully single men if you don't have one). To me, it's about being fun and focusing on each other, not going over the top.

So what's Valentine's Day about for you? Do you prefer the conventional things or not? What are your plans this year? Leave a comment and let me know!

Andrew and I did things a little different this year, we decided on an amount to spend and let one another pick out gifts online - I had my eye on a necklace and he wanted gun accessories. We don't really ever go to dinner we trade off cooking for one another and this year its his turn! I always make him a cake or cupcakes from scratch on Valentines Day too. We've come along way from our first Valentines when he got me a fishing pole, lol.

So, the Wendy's V-day was totally ours last year. :-)

This year, enh, I dunno. My brother was supposed to be here this wknd but canceled, so we hadn't planned anything.

But, funny story. Mark comes home 2 days ago really excited. He tells me he's got my V-Day present all picked out. Turns out, he found discount tickets to Disney on Ice. I tried not to, but I started cracking up and of course he got mad. Well, he thought Disney on Ice was like Olympic skaters skating to Disney songs, or a broadway musical on ice. Once I explained to him that it's a Disney Princess show for preschoolers, he understood why I laughed. It's the thought that counts!

We'll probably just give each other chocolate and save our money for birthday gifts, since both our birthdays are in less than a month.

I agree with you completely, and your Valentine's Day sounds like it was great! That's what it's all about, spending quality time with the ones you love :)

Jess, Oden, and I woke up in the morning and picked up my brothers for McDonald's breakfast. Then, we went shopping at Walmart. We basically just spent the day together and then Jess and I watched a movie at night. It was great! We did exchange small gifts, (chocolate and such) but that was the least important part of the day <3

As I get older I am realizing the holidays change for the better!!

Yeah, we kind of went for less conventional this year. We were running errands on Saturday night and Jacob found some good running shoes he wanted, so I told them they could be his Valentine's gift. Then we went to Wal-Mart and I told him which chocolates to get for me.

Valentine's day this year though was so much fun, after church we took a long nap and ate our chocolates, and watched the Olympics together. Then we made dinner together. I really enjoyed it.

That's the best kind! This year we celebrated V-day as a family and the kids loved it. We had a special Sunday dinner--heart shaped meat loaf, special pink smoothie to drink, shrimp cotail, and a fancy salad. Dessert was heart-shaped magic cookie bars. The kids were so excited and it was so much fun. Kurtis and I just gave each other candy. Sometimes the simple things are the best.
